Addressee: Apollon Alexandrovich Maikov (1826–1902), a state official and public figure (not to be confused with the poet Apollon Nikolayevich Maikov). Chekhov’s formal address "Многоуважаемый / Аполлон Александрович" and the closing "имею честь быть уважающий" indicate a respectful, semi-official register appropriate to committee correspondence rather than a personal friendship.
A brief, purely functional note. Chekhov informs Maikov that he has returned to Moscow from his travels (he had spent much of 1889 away, including at Luka in Ukraine) and states he is available should Maikov wish to convene "the Committee" — almost certainly a reference to a charitable or professional committee on which both men served (the letter gives no further specifics). He confirms his address is unchanged: Kudrinskaya- Sadovaya street, Korneyev’s house — the Chekhov family’s Moscow residence at this address (also known from other 1886–90 correspondence).
