1 Date and addressee. Moscow, 8 November 1889. Written to Viktor Alexandrovich Goltsev (1850–1906), editor of the journal Russkaya Mysl (Russian Thought), with whom Chekhov corresponded regularly as a contributor to the journal.
2 A brief cover note. Chekhov explains that a Petersburg acquaintance, N. M. Sokovnin, passing through Moscow, asked him to forward an enclosed poem to the editorial office of Russkaya Mysl. Chekhov is simply acting as an intermediary, passing along the submission and closing with courteous regards. The letter carries no personal news and makes no comment on the poem’s quality or suitability for publication.
