Letter · 1891

To F. A. Chervinsky, 14 September 1891. Moscow.

Ф. А. ЧЕРВИНСКОМУ, 14 сентября 1891 г. Москва.

Headnote

Dated 14 September 1891, from Moscow, to Fyodor Alekseyevich Chervinsky, a poet and playwright, then in Feodosia.

Chekhov opens by warning that a reply will be slow in coming, since a letter to Feodosia and back takes ten days. He reports that he has received and read Chervinsky’s play and will soon have it bound, and says he is looking forward to a second play, though he would have preferred a poem instead. He closes with good wishes and his signature, then adds a postscript noting that he showed the play to some acquaintances, who read it and approved. The letter ends with the address panel as written on the back – Chervinsky’s street address in St. Petersburg.

The tone is brief and cordial, with a light touch of teasing preference (a poem over a second play) characteristic of Chekhov’s notes to fellow writers.

You will not get an answer from me so quickly. I have to write to Feodosia. A letter there and an answer back from there takes 10 days.
Ответ получите Вы от меня не так скоро. Нужно писать в Феодосию. На письмо туда и ответ оттуда потребно 10 дней.
I received your play and read it, and in a few days I’ll have it bound. I’m waiting for the second play, though I would have preferred a poem.
Вашу пьесу получил и прочел, и на днях отдам в переплет. Жду второй пьесы, хотя предпочел бы поэму.
Keep well. I wish you all the best.
Будьте здоровы. Желаю Вам всего хорошего.
I gave your play to some acquaintances. They read it and approved.
Давал Вашу пьесу знакомым. Читали и одобряли.
