Kopilka (Alexander Chekhov's play)
Kopilka
also: Копилка, your play
The play Alexander Pavlovich Chekhov was struggling to write in spring 1889, first referenced (unnamed) in \S9 ("вашу пьесу", "your play"); its title, "Kopilka" (Копилка, "The Money-Box"), is CONFIRMED in \S8, where Anton critiques it at length as overly autobiographical. Plausibly, though not certainly, the same play Anton refers to without naming it in \SS10-11 as his brother's being "worn out with his play" and "suffering from an excess of revisions."
Reading notes
- To Al. P. Chekhov, 2 May 1889. Sumy. §9 your play
Alexander's unnamed play ("свою пьесу"), here requested for Anton's reading and comment. Almost certainly the same work later discussed at length and named "Kopilka" ("The Money-Box") in the correspondence around; provisionally identified with that play here pending merge-check against's apparatus, which is the fuller source for the title.
- To Al. P. Chekhov, 8 May 1889. Sumy. §8 "Kopilka"
This is the letter that CONFIRMS the title of Alexander Chekhov's play as "Kopilka" (Копилка, "The Money-Box"), previously referenced only as "your play"/"вашу пьесу" in the slightly earlier (§9). See, enriched here with the confirmed title.
