Letter · 1891

To M. N. Albov, 14 December 1891. Moscow.

М. Н. АЛЬБОВУ, 14 декабря 1891 г. Москва.

Headnote

Dated 14 December 1891, from Moscow, to Mikhail Nilovich Albov, an editor at the journal "Severny Vestnik" ("Northern Herald"), the same addressee as the letters of 30 September 1891, 22 October 1891, and 20 November 1891.

Chekhov reports that a certain Iv. Grekov, a young man, has sent him from Voronezh his tale "Poor in Spirit," asking Chekhov to forward it to "Severny Vestnik" and to put in a word on his behalf. Chekhov says he has sent the tale to Albov that same day, and that the author’s address can be found on the wrapper. He closes with a brief wish of health and signs off.

The tone is a quick, businesslike favor – Chekhov passing along an unsolicited manuscript from an unknown young writer, with minimal comment of his own, before closing.

Dear Mikhail Nilovich!
Уважаемый Михаил Нилович!
A certain Iv. Grekov, a young man, has sent me from Voronezh his tale "Poor in Spirit," with the request that I forward it to "Severny Vestnik" and put in a word for him.
Некий Ив. Греков, молодой человек, прислал мне из Воронежа свою повесть "Нищие духом" с просьбою переслать ее в "Северный вестник" и протежировать ему.
Today I sent you the tale. You will find the author’s address on the wrapper.
Сегодня я послал Вам повесть. Адрес автора Вы найдете на обертке.
Keep well.
Будьте здоровы.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
