3 Dear
Lidia Alexeyevna, I have received and already read your story. By rights, since you did not care to see me, I ought to give your story a thorough drubbing, but... may Allah forgive you!
4 The story is good, very good even, but were I its author, or its editor, I would certainly have sat over it another day or two. In the first place, the architecture... You should begin straight off with the words "He went up to the window"... and so forth. Then the hero and Sonya ought to talk not in the corridor but on
the Nevsky, and their conversation ought to be given from the middle, so that the reader thinks they have already been talking a long while. And so on. In the second place, whoever it is that is Dunya ought to be a man. In the third place, more should be said about Sonya... In the fourth place, there is no need for the characters to be students and tutors–that is stale. Make the hero a
clerk in the department of assessed taxes, and Dunya an officer, say... Baryshkina is an ugly surname. "He returned"–that is a refined title... But I see I have not restrained myself, and have taken my revenge on you after all, for treating me as a maid of honor of
Catherine’s day would, that is, for not wanting me to train my criticism on your story by word of mouth rather than in writing.
5 If you like, I will hand your story over to
Goltsev, who will be at my place until the first of March. But it would be better to make a few alterations first–there is no hurry. Copy the story out once more, and you will see what a change there will be: it will grow richer, rounder, and the figures clearer.
6 As for language and manner–there you are a master. Were I an editor, I would pay you no less than 200 a sheet.
7 Write to me today what you mean to do. Awaiting your instructions, I remain, respectfully and ready to serve,
9 Your characters are somehow in a terrible hurry about everything. Throw out the words "ideal" and "impulse." The devil with them!
