Headnote

A brief, high-spirited note of 13 (25) April 1891, written from Monte Carlo itself, part of the famous 1891 European travel series; the side trip announced at the end of (written from Nice the day before). Chekhov describes an evening at the roulette tables – a run of winning and losing that leaves him down about forty francs, the spectacle of ladies losing thousands, the tables heaped with gold, and a wry aside comparing the resort to a "den of thieves," with gamblers’ suicides said to be commonplace. He notes that Suvorin fils also lost at the tables, reports that he is tired of travel and ready to head home, sends his greetings, and closes with a one-word note on the weather.

I am writing to you from Monte Carlo, from the very place where they play roulette.
The devil knows what an inflammatory game it is. At first I won 80 francs, then I lost, then I won again, and in the end I was left down about forty francs. I have twenty francs left in reserve; I’ll go try my luck a bit more. I have been here since morning, and now it is close to midnight. If only I had money to spare, I think I’d play a whole year and just walk through the magnificent halls of the casino! It’s interesting to watch the ladies who lose thousands. This morning one young lady lost 5000 francs. The tables with their heaps of gold are interesting too. In a word, the devil knows what. This sweet Monte Carlo is very much like a pretty... den of thieves. Suicides of those who have lost everything are a commonplace occurrence.
Suvorin fils lost 300 francs.
We’ll see each other soon. I’ve grown weary of roaming the wide world. It’s high time I knew when to stop, or my heels will start to ache.
I bow low to everyone and wish you happiness.
Overcast.
