Headnote
A postcard-style travel note begun 12 (24) April 1891, in Nice, and apparently finished or annotated the next day ("13(?) April, Friday"); to the Chekhov family, part of the famous 1891 European travel series. Written the same calendar day as, but later than (sent from Finalmarina, en route along the coast from Genoa): by this note Chekhov’s party has completed the run to Nice and crossed into France. He reports fine but overcast, warm weather, a small loss at roulette, a comic operetta scene, the palms along the coast, and the many Russians wintering there; repeats the Warsaw poste-restante address ("Bookcase") for mail; and signs off announcing a side trip to Monaco.

I have arrived in France. We have put up at a hotel on the seashore. The sky is overcast. It is warm. Yesterday I played roulette and lost 8 francs. I listened to an operetta; the baritone made up his own bed and put a chamber pot under it; the audience laughed. Palms grow all along the coast. In the evenings they fish with nets. There are many Russians here.
Я прибыл во Францию. Остановились в отеле на берегу моря. Небо пасмурно. Тепло. Вчера играл в рулетку и проиграл 8 франков. Слушал оперетку; баритон постилал себе постель и поставил под кровать посудину; публика смеялась. По всему побережью растут пальмы. По вечерам сетями ловят рыбу. Много русских.
