Chekhov acknowledges a letter from Suvorin and reports having already telegraphed a shopping list – a book by the naturalist Kaigorodov and Mocha coffee – because the nearby town of Aleksin has burned down and nothing can be bought locally. He adds soap and soda to the list, agrees to accompany Suvorin as far as Vyazma, but begs off a proposed trip to Odessa (and, by extension, Batum) as too great a claim on his time, then closes with a brief note on the weather.
