Letter · 1891

To A. S. Suvorin, 25 June 1891. Bogimovo.

А. С. СУВОРИНУ, 25 июня 1891 г. Богимово.

Headnote

A short, practical note of 25 June 1891 from Bogimovo, the Kaluga province estate where the Chekhov family was spending the summer, to Aleksei Sergeyevich Suvorin, publisher of Novoye Vremya: dateline, an errand-and-travel paragraph, a closing line, and signature. Chekhov acknowledges a letter from Suvorin and reports having already telegraphed a shopping list – a book by the naturalist Kaigorodov and Mocha coffee – because the nearby town of Aleksin has burned down and nothing can be bought locally. He adds soap and soda to the list, agrees to accompany Suvorin as far as Vyazma, but begs off a proposed trip to Odessa (and, by extension, Batum) as too great a claim on his time, then closes with a brief note on the weather.

On getting your letter, I telegraphed you at once to bring Kaigorodov’s "The Mushroom Gatherer" and 5 pounds of Mocha coffee. Aleksin has burned entirely down, and we have nowhere to buy either coffee or anything else. If you’d be so kind, bring 2 bars of glycerine soap and get 2 pounds of soda (for the sick) from Ferreyn’s, next to the "Slavyansky Bazaar." That’s all. I’ll go to Vyazma with you, but to Odessa – I’m afraid. Odessa will take a great deal of time, and I’ll likely want to go on to Batum. No, don’t tempt me.
I’m waiting impatiently. The weather is splendid.
Нетерпеливо жду. Погода великолепная.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
