1 Two o’clock in the afternoon. In the "Parisian News" drapery shop, in one of the arcades, business is in full swing. There is a monotonous hum of shop assistants’ voices, the kind of hum you hear in a school when the teacher makes all the pupils recite something aloud in unison. And this uniform noise is not broken by the ladies’ laughter, nor by the bang of the glass front door, nor by the boys running about.
2 In the middle of the shop stands
Polinka, daughter of
Marya Andreyevna, who keeps a dressmaking establishment – a small, thin blonde girl – looking for someone with her eyes. A black-browed boy runs up to her and asks, looking at her very earnestly:
3 "What will you have, madam?"
4 "
Nikolai Timofeich always attends to me," answers Polinka.
5 And the shop assistant Nikolai Timofeich, a slim brunet, his hair curled, dressed in the latest fashion, with a large pin in his necktie, has already cleared a space on the counter, craned his neck, and looks at Polinka with a smile.
6 "
Pelageya Sergeyevna, my respects!" he cries in a fine, healthy baritone. "This way, if you please!"
7 "Ah, good day!" says Polinka, coming up to him. "You see, I’m back to you again... Give me some agraman, some kind or other."
8 "For what purpose, precisely?"
9 "For a bodice, for the back, in a word, for the whole trimming set."
10 "This very minute."
11 Nikolai Timofeich lays several kinds of agraman braid before Polinka; she chooses lazily and begins to haggle.
12 "Come now, a
ruble isn’t dear at all!"
the assistant urges, smiling condescendingly. "This is French agraman, eight-cornered... If you like, we have the ordinary kind, sold by weight... That’s forty-five kopecks the
arshin, but it’s not the same quality at all! Come now, madam!"
13 "I still need a beaded trim for the side, with agraman buttons," says Polinka, bending over the braid, and for some reason sighing. "And wouldn’t you have some beaded bugle-drops to match this color?"
14 "We have them, madam."
15 Polinka bends still lower over the counter and asks quietly:
16 "And why was it, Nikolai Timofeich, that you left us so early on Thursday?"
17 "Hm!... Strange that you noticed it," says the assistant with a smirk. "You were so taken up with the gentleman student that... it’s strange you noticed it at all!"
18 Polinka flushes and says nothing. The assistant, his fingers trembling nervously, closes the boxes and, for no reason at all, stacks them one on top of another. A minute passes in silence.
19 "I still need some beaded lace," says Polinka, raising guilty eyes to the assistant.
20 "What kind would you like? Beaded lace on tulle, black and colored – the very latest trim."
21 "And how much is it?"
22 "The black from eighty kopecks, and the colored at two rubles fifty kopecks. And I shall never come to see you again, madam," Nikolai Timofeich adds quietly.
24 "Why not? It’s very simple. You ought to understand it yourself. What call have I to torment myself? A strange business! Do you suppose it’s pleasant for me to watch that student playing his part around you, madam? I see everything and understand everything. Ever since autumn he’s been courting you in earnest, and you go walking with him almost every day, and when he sits visiting you, why, you fix your eyes on him as if he were some kind of angel. You’re in love with him, for you there’s no better man alive than he is, well and good, there’s nothing more to say about it..."
25 Polinka says nothing and, in confusion, runs her finger along the counter.
26 "I see it all perfectly well," the assistant goes on. "What reason have I to keep coming to see you? I have my own self-respect. Not everyone enjoys being a fifth wheel on the cart. What was it you were asking for?"
27 "
Mama told me to get any number of things, but I’ve forgotten. I still need some plume trim."
28 "What kind would you like?"
29 "Something better, whatever’s most fashionable."
30 "The most fashionable now is made of bird feather. As for color, if you like, heliotrope is fashionable now, or the canak shade, that is, bordeaux with yellow. The choice is enormous. But what all this business is leading to, I simply cannot understand. Here you are, in love, and what will come of it?"
31 Red patches come out on Nikolai Timofeich’s face around the eyes. He crumples the soft, fluffy braid in his hands and goes on muttering:
32 "I suppose you imagine you’ll marry him, is that it? Well, as for that – you may as well give up that idea of yours. Students aren’t allowed to marry, and besides, do you really think he comes to see you meaning to end it all honestly? Not likely! Why, these students, they don’t even count the likes of us as human beings... They go calling on merchants and dressmakers only to laugh at our lack of education and to carouse. At home, or in respectable houses, it’s shameful to drink, but with plain, uneducated people like us, there’s no one for them to be ashamed of, they can turn everything upside down and no harm done. Just so, madam! So which plume will you take, then? And if he’s courting you and playing at love, it’s plain enough why... When he becomes a doctor or a lawyer, he’ll remember: ’Ah,’ he’ll say, ’I once had a little blonde thing! I wonder where she is now?’ I daresay even now, back there among the students, he’s boasting that he’s got a little dressmaker’s girl in view."
33 Polinka sits down on a stool and gazes pensively at the mound of white boxes.
34 "No, I won’t take the plume after all!" she sighs. "Let mama get whatever she likes herself, I might choose wrong. Give me six arshins of fringe for the dust-coat, the kind at forty kopecks the arshin. And for the same coat give me some coconut buttons, with the eyelets sewn right through... so they’ll hold more firmly..."
35 Nikolai Timofeich wraps up the fringe and the buttons for her. She looks guiltily into his face and, plainly, waits for him to go on talking, but he stays grimly silent and busies himself tidying the plume trim.
36 "Mustn’t forget to get some buttons for the dressing-gown too..." she says after a silence, wiping her pale lips with her handkerchief.
37 "What kind would you like?"
38 "We’re sewing it for a merchant’s wife, so give me something that stands out from the ordinary run..."
39 "Yes, if it’s for a merchant’s wife, then you want something gaudier. Here you are, madam, buttons. A combination of blue, red, and fashionable gold. The showiest we have. Those with more delicate taste take the black matte ones with a single shining rim from us. Only I don’t understand. Can you really not think it through for yourself? Well, what are these... walks of yours going to lead to?"
40 "I don’t know myself..." Polinka whispers, bending over the buttons. "I don’t know myself, Nikolai Timofeich, what’s happening to me."
41 Behind Nikolai Timofeich’s back, pressing him against the counter, a portly shop assistant with side-whiskers squeezes through and, beaming with the most refined gallantry, calls out:
42 "Would you be so kind, madame, as to step this way! We have jersey jackets in three styles: plain, soutache-trimmed, and beaded! Which would you like?"
43 At the same moment a stout lady passes near Polinka, saying in a deep low voice, almost a bass:
44 "Only, please, see that they’re not pieced together but woven whole, and that the seal is set in flush."
45 "Make as if you’re examining the goods," whispers Nikolai Timofeich, bending toward Polinka with a forced smile. "You, God help you, look so pale and sickly, quite changed in the face. He’ll throw you over, Pelageya Sergeyevna! And if he ever does marry, it won’t be for love but out of hunger, he’ll be tempted by your money. He’ll fit himself out a decent household on your dowry, and then he’ll be ashamed of you. He’ll hide you from his guests and his colleagues, because you’re uneducated, and this is just how he’ll put it: my old battle-axe. Do you think you could hold your own in a doctor’s or a lawyer’s society? To them you’re a dressmaker, an ignorant creature!"
46 "Nikolai Timofeich!" someone calls from the other end of the shop. "Here’s a young lady asking for three arshins of picot-edged ribbon! Do we have any?"
47 Nikolai Timofeich turns aside, arranges his face into a grin, and calls back:
48 "We have it, madam! We have picot-edged ribbon, satin-and-taffeta, and satin-and-moire!"
49 "By the way, so I don’t forget,
Olya asked me to get her a corset!" says Polinka.
50 "There are... tears in your eyes!" Nikolai Timofeich says, frightened... "What’s this for? Come along to the corsets, I’ll screen you from view, it’s awkward otherwise."
51 With a forced smile and exaggerated briskness, the assistant quickly leads Polinka to the corset department and hides her from the public behind a tall pyramid of boxes...
52 "What size corset would you like?" he asks loudly, and at the same moment whispers: "Wipe your eyes!"
53 "I... I need one in forty-eight centimeters! Only, please, she asked for a double one, lined... with real whalebone... I need to talk with you, Nikolai Timofeich. Come this evening!"
54 "What is there to talk about? There’s nothing to talk about."
55 "You’re the only one who... loves me, and there’s no one but you I can talk to."
56 "Not reed, not bone, but real whalebone... What is there for us to talk about? There’s nothing to talk about... You’re going out walking with him today, aren’t you?"
57 "I... I am."
58 "Well, then what is there to talk about? Talking won’t help... You’re in love with him, aren’t you?"
59 "Yes..." Polinka whispers falteringly, and large tears spring from her eyes.
60 "What talks could there possibly be?" mutters Nikolai Timofeich, shrugging his shoulders nervously and turning pale. "No talks are needed at all... Wipe your eyes, that’s all there is to it. I... I want nothing..."
61 At this moment a tall, gaunt shop assistant comes up to the pyramid of boxes and says to his customer:
62 "Might I interest you in some fine elastic for garters, one that doesn’t stop the circulation, recommended by medicine..."
63 Nikolai Timofeich screens Polinka from view and, trying to conceal both her and his own agitation, twists his face into a smile and says loudly:
64 "There are two kinds of lace, madam! Cotton and silk! Oriental, British, Valenciennes, chain-stitch torchon – these are the cotton ones, madam, and rococo, soutache, cambrai – these are the silk ones... For God’s sake, wipe away your tears! Someone’s coming this way!"
65 And, seeing that the tears are still flowing, he goes on even louder:
66 "Spanish, rococo, soutache, cambrai... Stockings, fil d’Ecosse, cotton, silk..."
