A Terrible Night

Страшная ночь

Headnote

1 A Terrible Night (Strashnaya noch’) appeared in 1884, one of the rapid stream of comic sketches Chekhov was turning out in these years for the Moscow humor press under the byline “Antosha Chekhonte.” It belongs to a recognizable minor genre of the period – the spiritualist spoof, mocking the séance craze then fashionable in educated Russian households, table-turning, summoned spirits, and all.

The story is a frame narrative: a man named Panikhidin tells a circle of listeners about the night, on Christmas Eve, when he came home from a séance at which the spirit of Spinoza had predicted his death before dawn, only to find a coffin standing in the middle of his room. The comedy is broad and fast, built on repetition and escalation in the early manner – the coffin recurs, first in the narrator’s own lodging, then in a friend’s, multiplying the terror instead of resolving it, until two grown men are reduced to pinching each other on a cold staircase to prove they are not hallucinating.

Chekhov signals the joke from the first line: nearly every character’s name is built from Russian funerary vocabulary – Panikhidin from panikhida (a memorial service), Upokoev from upokoy (rest in peace), Pogostov from pogost (graveyard), Kladbishchensky from kladbishche (cemetery), Cherepov suggesting cherep (skull). The mock-Gothic apparatus – the storm, the extinguished lamp, the dread of the supernatural – is undercut completely by the mundane explanation waiting in the final letter: the coffins are simply an undertaker’s assets, smuggled out to creditors’ relatives ahead of a bankruptcy inventory. The story trades entirely in the gap between the narrator’s mounting metaphysical horror and the comically bureaucratic truth, a favorite early move Chekhov would later refine into subtler forms.

Ivan Petrovich Panikhidin turned pale, turned down the lamp, and began
