The Wedding with the General (a story)

Свадьба с генералом (рассказ)

Headnote

1 The Wedding with the General (Свадьба с генералом, subtitled “a story”) appeared in 1884, among the rapid-fire comic sketches Chekhov produced under the byline “Antosha Chekhonte” while completing his medical degree. It belongs to the wedding-feast genre he returned to more than once in these years – a stock social occasion staged as a small comedy of manners, built here on a single mercenary absurdity: a family too proud of its own respectability to admit that the “general” they have hired to grace the supper table is a fiction bought and paid for.

The retired rear admiral Revunov-Karaulov is talked into attending a stranger’s wedding by his nephew, ostensibly as a family favor – the patriarchal Lyubimsky household, we are told, longs for nothing so much as a general’s presence at the table, a cheap vanity Andryusha frames as an “innocent pleasure” costing the old man nothing. The joke tightens once the admiral arrives: the hostess is visibly disappointed that a mere rear admiral, not a proper general, has been produced, and reassures herself only by counting his medals. Chekhov never states that money changed hands until the story’s final turn, when the hostess’s complaint about the admiral’s behavior lets slip that Andryusha was paid a fee to procure him – transforming a family favor, retroactively, into a hired performance.

The comedy’s engine, and its cruelty, is the admiral’s own naval jargon. Delighted to find a young midshipman at the table, he unspools long strings of authentic maritime commands – rigging terms, sail-handling orders, technical language nobody else at the table can follow – oblivious that he is boring the other guests into open hostility. His volubility is not foolishness so much as loneliness: a man whose rank has gone to waste, finally handed an audience, however unwilling. When he learns what he was actually hired for, the reversal is total and wordless – Chekhov reports only that his tipsiness fell away in an instant, and he dresses and leaves without another line of dialogue. The story closes on a flat, quiet sentence withholding any further comment: he never went to another wedding.
