A Toast to the Prose-writers

Тост прозаиков

Headnote

"A Toast to the Prose-writers" dates from 1884, staged as an after-dinner speech for a specific real occasion: the twentieth anniversary of the comic weekly Budilnik ("The Alarm Clock"), one of the Moscow humor magazines that had employed the young Chekhov – writing as Antosha Chekhonte – since the start of the decade. The piece belongs to the small, occasional genre of the mock or semi-mock banquet toast, a form the journal culture of the period produced constantly and that Chekhov, still in his mid-twenties and only a few years into the staff, was evidently asked to supply for the anniversary dinner itself.

The toast turns on a deliberate refusal to be festive. A prose-writer, the speaker insists at the outset, cannot manufacture the light, sparkling epigram an occasion like this seems to demand – flint does not become lace no matter how it is heated – and what follows is accordingly a meditation on mortality dressed as celebration. Twenty years is old age for a magazine though youth for a man; the speaker counts the "generations" of contributors who have passed through Budilnik’s ranks and vanished – to death, to more secure trades (notarial work, the postal service), or simply to exhaustion – in startlingly short spans, and reads in that turnover a diagnosis of the profession’s precarious, unhealthy condition rather than occasion for congratulation.

The characteristic move is the pivot at the close: having spent the toast explaining a symptom of illness, the speaker declines to say whether the institution should be preserved or allowed to lapse, offering instead a conditional toast to whichever outcome turns out to be the healthy one. It is a slight, occasional piece, but an early instance of a device Chekhov would keep refining – diagnosis without verdict, an ending that toasts an outcome still undetermined rather than the occasion actually being marked.

– Проза остается прозой даже тогда, когда кружится голова
