1 A young fellow, flaxen-haired and sharp-cheekboned, in a ragged little sheepskin coat and big black felt boots, waited until
the district doctor, having finished his morning surgery, was on his way back from the hospital to his own quarters, and went up to him timidly.
2 "Begging your honor’s mercy," he said.
3 "What is it?"
4 The fellow wiped his palm up his nose from below, glanced at the sky, and only then answered:
5 "Begging your honor’s mercy... You’ve got, here, your worship, in the prisoners’ ward, my brother
Vaska, the blacksmith from
Varvarino..."
6 "Yes, and what of it?"
7 "I’m
Vaska’s brother, that’s to say... There’s two of us at father’s: he’s Vaska, and I’m
Kirila. And besides us there’s three sisters, and Vaska’s married, and there’s a little one too... A lot of mouths, and no one to work... In the smithy, I’ll tell you, the fire hasn’t been lit for near two years now. I’m at the calico mill myself, I don’t know smith’s work, and what kind of worker is father? Not only can’t he work, he can’t so much as get his spoon to his mouth right, carries it right past."
8 "What is it you want from me?"
9 "Do me the kindness, let Vaska go!"
10 The doctor looked at Kirila in astonishment and, without a word, walked on. The fellow ran ahead of him and flopped down at his feet.
11 "Doctor, kind sir!" he entreated, blinking his eyes and again wiping his palm across his nose. "Show a godly mercy, let Vaska go home! I’ll pray to God for you forever! Your honor, let him go! They’re all dying of hunger! Mother bawls the whole blessed day, Vaska’s wife bawls... it’s plain death! I can’t bear to look at the world! Do me the kindness, let him go, kind sir!"
12 "Are you a fool, or out of your mind?" asked the doctor, looking at him angrily. "How am I supposed to let him go? He’s a prisoner!"
13 Kirila began to cry.
14 "Let him go!"
15 "Pah, you queer fellow! What right have I got? Am I a jailer, or what? They brought him to me at the hospital to be treated, I treat him, and I have exactly as much right to let him go as I have to lock you up in prison. You fool!"
16 "But they put him away for nothing! Before the trial, mind you, he sat a whole year in the lockup, and now, if you ask me, what’s he sitting for? If he’d killed somebody, say, or stolen horses, fine – but he just landed in it, out of a clear sky."
17 "That may be so, but what have I got to do with it?"
18 "They locked up a peasant and don’t even know themselves what for. He was drunk, your honor, didn’t remember a thing, even clouted father on the ear and cut his own cheek open on a branch, drunk as he was, and two of our lads – they’d taken it into their heads, you see, to get some Turkish tobacco – got to telling him he should break into the Armenian’s shop with them at night, for the tobacco. Drunk as he was, fool that he is, he listened to them. So they broke the lock, see, got in, and started smashing everything up. Turned the whole place over, broke the glass, spilled the flour about. Drunk – there’s the whole story! Well, then
the constable comes... this and that, off to the investigator. A whole year they sat in the lockup, and a week ago, on a Wednesday, they tried all three, in town. A soldier standing behind with a gun... the folk swore an oath. Vaska’s the least guilty of the lot, but the gentlemen decided he was the ringleader. Both the other lads got the lockup, and Vaska got the prisoners’ battalion for three years. And what for? Judge for yourself, as a godly man!"
19 "Again, I have nothing to do with that. Go to the authorities."
20 "I’ve already been to the authorities! I went to the court, wanted to hand in a petition, they wouldn’t even take the petition. I’ve been to the
police captain too, and to the investigator, and every one of them says, ’Not my business!’ Whose business is it, then? And here at the hospital there’s nobody above you. Whatever you please, your honor, that’s what you do."
21 "You’re a fool!" sighed the doctor. "Once the jury’s found him guilty, there’s nothing to be done about it, not by
the governor, not even by the minister, let alone the police captain. You’re wasting your trouble!"
22 "And who tried him, then?"
24 "What sort of gentlemen are they? They were our own peasants!
Andrei Guryev was one,
Alyoshka Khuk was one."
25 "Well, I’m getting cold standing here talking with you..."
26 The doctor waved his hand and walked quickly to his door. Kirila made to follow him, but seeing the door slam shut, stopped. For some ten minutes he stood motionless in the middle of the hospital yard and, without putting on his cap, gazed at the doctor’s quarters, then sighed deeply, scratched himself slowly, and made for the gate.
27 "Who’s left to go to?" he muttered, coming out onto the road. "One says it’s not his business, another says it’s not his business. Whose business is it, then? No, that’s it – till you grease somebody’s palm, nothing gets done. That doctor talks and talks, and the whole time he’s looking at my fist: won’t I slip him a
blue note? Well, brother, I’ll go all the way to the governor if I have to."
28 Shifting from foot to foot, glancing back now and again for no reason at all, he trudged lazily along the road, seemingly turning over in his mind where to go... It was not cold, and the snow crunched faintly underfoot. Before him, no farther than half a
verst off, the
district town where his brother had lately been tried spread out on its hill. To the right the prison showed dark, with its red roof and its sentry boxes at the corners; to the left lay the big town grove, now covered in hoarfrost. It was quiet; only some old man in a woman’s quilted jacket and an enormous cap walked ahead of him, coughing and calling out to a cow he was driving toward the town.
29 "Morning to you,
grandad!" said Kirila, drawing level with the old man.
30 "Morning..."
31 "Driving her to sell?"
32 "No, just so..." the old man answered lazily.
33 "A townsman, are you?"
34 They fell to talking. Kirila told him why he had been at the hospital and what he had said to the doctor.
35 "Well, of course, the doctor don’t know the first thing about this kind of business," the old man told him, as the two of them entered the town. "He may be a gentleman, and trained to cure people with all sorts of remedies, but as for giving you real advice, or drawing up a proper petition, say – that he can’t do. There’s special authorities for that. You’ve been to
the justice of the peace and the police captain. They’re no good for your business either."
36 "Where am I to go, then?"
39 "That’s right, in Zolotovo. He’s the chief over your lot. If it’s got anything to do with peasant business, even
the district police chief hasn’t got full say against him."
40 "That’s a long way to go, brother!... A good fifteen
versts, if not more."
41 "A man who really needs to, he’ll go a hundred versts."
42 "That’s so... Ought I hand him a petition, or what?"
43 "You’ll find out when you get there. If it’s a petition,
the clerk will write it up for you quick enough. The permanent member’s got a clerk."
44 Having parted from the old man, Kirila stood a while in the middle of the square, thought it over, and turned back out of the town. He decided he would go to Zolotovo.
45 Some five days later, coming back to his quarters after seeing patients, the doctor again saw Kirila in his yard. This time the fellow was not alone, but with some thin, very pale old man, who kept nodding his head without stopping, like a pendulum, and mumbling with his lips.
46 "Your honor, I’ve come again to your mercy!" Kirila began. "Here, I’ve brought father, do me the kindness, let Vaska go! The permanent member wouldn’t even talk to me. Says, ’Get out of here!’"
47 "Your high honor," the old man hissed through his throat, raising trembling eyebrows, "be merciful! We’re poor folk, we can’t thank your honor properly, but if it should please your mercy, Kiryushka or Vaska can work it off. Let them work."
48 "We’ll work it off!" said Kirila, and raised his hand as though about to take an oath. "Let him go! They’re dying of hunger! They cry and cry, your honor!"
49 The fellow glanced quickly at his father, tugged him by the sleeve, and the two of them, as if on command, fell down at the doctor’s feet together. The doctor waved his hand and, without looking back, walked quickly to his door.
