A Woman's Toast

Женский тост

Headnote

1 A Woman’s Toast (“Zhenskiy tost” in the original) is a tiny 1884 sketch, one of the mock-oratory pieces Chekhov turned out in his apprentice years for the Moscow humor weeklies. It has no plot and barely a scene: it is simply the transcript of an after-dinner toast, a comic set piece in the tradition of the banquet speech, interrupted by the imagined heckling of its own audience.

The speaker piles up stock gallantries – women as the muse of poets, the inspiration of painters, the ruin and salvation of every man at the table – pushing each compliment just past the point of sincerity until it curdles into self-parody. Chekhov punctuates the bombast with bracketed audience noise (“Not witty! sit down!”, “Old stuff! enough of that!”), letting the crowd’s impatience do the work of a punchline the speaker himself never quite lands. It is a slight piece, but a clear early example of Chekhov’s ear for the empty rhetoric of public occasions – a target he would return to, at far greater length, throughout his career.

to my mind she is everything! (Cries: enough! sit down!) Without her the world would be the same as
