The Cherubic Hymn (Kheruvimskaya) is sung at the Great Entrance of the Orthodox Divine Liturgy, one of the service's central choral set-pieces; Dmitry Bortnyansky, longtime director of the Imperial Court Chapel Choir, composed a numbered series of settings of it that were standard parish repertoire throughout the 19th century, and No. 7 was among the most widely performed. Chekhov singles out the Nice church choir's rendition -- sung by the ladies mentioned earlier in this same section -- as the service's musical high point.
