  The French loanword "ingenue" (used untranslated even in the Russian) names the stock role of the innocent young leading lady in amateur or provincial theater -- the part Zina evidently played in General Lukhachev's troupe, and the description under which the narrator remembers her rather than by any deeper acquaintance.
