"Распутная жизнь" / "распутица" pun

dissolute life pun

also: распутная жизнь, распутица, dissolute life

The closing entry of Chekhov's "A Glossary for Young Ladies," punning \emph{распутный} ("dissolute," "debauched") against \emph{распутица} (the autumn/spring season of impassable muddy roads in rural Russia), both sharing the root \emph{путь} ("way/road"): postmen and coachmen who travel during the mud season are mock-accused of leading a dissolute life. The translation's "dissolute... dissolving mud" approximates the near-homophony.
