Belisarius

also: Велизарий, Flavius Belisarius

Byzantine general under Emperor Justinian I (c. 500-565), renowned for his military campaigns and, in later legend (largely apocryphal), for ending his life blind and begging -- a story that made him a stock tragic role in nineteenth-century melodrama and a byword for a great man brought low by fate and ingratitude.
