The apocryphal Book of Judith heroine who beheads the besieging Assyrian general Holofernes with his own sword after he falls into a drunken sleep; the narrator compares the postman's saber, carried in on its strap, to the long flat sword shown in cheap popular prints (lubok) standing over Holofernes's couch as Judith looms above it.
