The official periodical of the Russian Imperial Navy, published from 1848 onward; Chekhov combs its 1862-1882 subject index for articles on Sakhalin while preparing for his 1890 journey and the research that became \emph{The Island of Sakhalin} (\emph{Ostrov Sakhalin}).

\emph{Morskoy sbornik} ("The Marine Miscellany"), the official periodical of the Russian Imperial Navy since 1848; Chekhov has borrowed a twenty-year subject index (1862-1882) to its articles and is combing it for material on Sakhalin, part of the research he undertook ahead of his 1890 journey there and the book that became \emph{The Island of Sakhalin} (\emph{Ostrov Sakhalin}). The volume is on loan and due back the next morning, which is the reason he gives for cancelling this visit.
