Chekhov states plainly that he does not know her at all, in contrast to the good things he has heard about Savina; no prior relationship between Chekhov and Abarinova should be assumed from this letter.

PROBABLE, not certain: identified here only by surname ("Абаринова"), consistent with, Antonina Ivanovna Abarinova, an actress already established elsewhere in this corpus (first appearance, where Chekhov states he does not know her personally). The identification of this \S4 mention with that same entity is treated as likely but not confirmed, since no other identifying detail is given in this letter beyond the surname and the role (Babakina) she is approved to play in the Petersburg "Ivanov."
