Ivan Sergeich's wife, a graduate of an institute for young ladies, whom Father Yakov comes upon one dawn washing her own worn linen at the riverbank rather than let the village see the family's poverty; her shame at being discovered mirrors, and helps explain, Father Yakov's own concealment of his circumstances.
