A gaunt old plasterer from the Ryazan province, drunk and half-drowned after stumbling into a ford; pulled from the river, he babbles incoherently about a dispute over seven rubles owed him, is 'revived' first by being rocked in a mat and then by being stripped and rubbed down, and dies before the story's end.
