  The biblical patriarch Joseph, proverbial for resisting the seductive advances of Potiphar's wife -- invoked here as a byword for chastity, opposite the debauched emperor Caligula.

• The Requiem §31 the sufferings of the little boy Joseph

  Genesis 37-45: Joseph, sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, endures years of suffering before rising in Egypt. A story of a child's undeserved suffering that would especially affect a young girl -- and, in retrospect, foreshadows Maria's own hard fate.
