Sinani

A Karaite merchant who sits in Asmolov's shop in Yalta; Chekhov addresses a telegram to Maria Pavlovna (Masha) care of Sinani at the shop while she is visiting the Crimea. The Karaites are a distinct Turkic-speaking, Jewish-scripture-adhering ethnic and religious community, historically and legally differentiated in the Russian Empire from Ashkenazi Jews.
