A port town on the Sea of Azov in the Taurida province of southern Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire); Maxim Gorchakov holds burgher (meshchanin) status there, the small-town legal estate typical of petty tradesmen and tenant farmers of the region Chekhov knew from his own Taganrog upbringing.
