vessel
Petersburg (steamer)
Petersburg
also: "Петербург"
The Volunteer Fleet steamer Chekhov is waiting for at Korsakovsky Post to carry him home from Sakhalin toward Russia by way of Japan and points west; a night-time arrival is first mistaken for it (it proves to be the "Baikal" instead), and it is also the ship the shipwrecked American whalers sheltering at the post are waiting for.
Reading notes
- To A. S. Suvorin, 13 July 1891. Bogimovo. §4 Has the "Petersburg" come in with Shcherbak aboard?
The same-named Volunteer Fleet steamer "Petersburg" that carried Chekhov home from Sakhalin the previous winter; here it is simply a scheduled steamer Chekhov expects to have brought Suvorin's Odessa-circle acquaintance Dr. Shcherbak south, not the same voyage.
