The Kreutzer Sonata

Kreutzer Sonata

also: Крейцерова соната, Крейц соната, Kreytserova sonata

Leo Tolstoy's 1889 novella on jealousy, marriage, and sexual morality, banned by the Russian censor from ordinary publication in early 1890 and consequently circulated chiefly in manuscript and lithographed copies passed hand to hand; this letter shows Chekhov relaying his own copy through Modest Tchaikovsky to N. M. Sokovnin and back, a small concrete instance of that circulation.
