1 "A Long Tongue" (1886) is a brief comic dialogue-story built almost entirely out of a single unstoppable monologue. Natalya Mihalovna, newly returned from a holiday in Yalta, regales her husband Vasichka over dinner with rapturous talk of Crimean mountain scenery – and then, unable to help herself, lets slip an increasingly indiscreet story about her travelling companion Yulia Petrovna’s flirtation with a local Tatar guide. In trying to distance herself from the scandal she is describing, Natalya’s own account keeps contradicting itself, and it becomes clear to her husband – and to the reader – that she was every bit as "friendly" with her own guide, Suleiman, as Yulia was with hers.

2 The story is a compact character study in self-betrayal through speech: Natalya’s chattering tongue, which cannot resist filling every silence and adding every incriminating detail, undoes the respectable front she is trying to maintain. Chekhov gives her almost the entire word count, letting her romantic, gossipy, self-contradicting voice indict itself without a word of authorial commentary; the husband’s terse, suspicious interjections are enough to let the reader see what she cannot admit even to herself. It is a slight, satirical sketch of provincial-gentry manners and marital comedy, typical of Chekhov’s rapid-fire 1880s magazine work.

Natalya Mihalovna, a young married lady just back that morning from Yalta, was having dinner and, her tongue running on without a moment’s rest, telling her husband all about the delights of the Crimea. Her husband, delighted himself, gazed tenderly at her rapturous face, listened, and now and then put in a question...
"But they say living down there is fearfully dear?" he asked, among other things.
"What can I tell you? In my opinion the expense is exaggerated. The devil is not so black as he’s painted. I, for instance, together with Yulia Petrovna, had a perfectly comfortable, perfectly decent room for twenty roubles a day. It all depends, my dear, on knowing how to live. Of course, if you want to go off somewhere into the mountains – to Ai-Petri, say – and hire a horse and a guide – well, then, naturally, it’s dear. Frightfully dear! But, Vasichka, what mountains they are! Just imagine to yourself towering, towering mountains, a thousand times higher than a church... Up above, mist, mist, mist... Down below, enormous boulders, boulders, boulders... And the pines... Ah, I simply cannot bring myself to remember it!"
"By the way – while you were away I read in some magazine or other about the native Tatar guides down there. Such vile creatures! Is it true they’re some sort of special breed of people?"
Natalya Mihalovna made a contemptuous little grimace and tossed her head.
"Ordinary Tatars, nothing special about them at all..." she said. "I only saw them from a distance, though, in passing... They were pointed out to me, but I paid no attention. I have always felt a certain prejudice, papochka, against all those Circassians, Greeks... Moors!"
"They say they’re terrible Don Juans."
"Perhaps! There are some shameless creatures who..."
Natalya Mihalovna suddenly gave a start, as though she had remembered something dreadful, stared at her husband for half a minute with frightened eyes, and said, drawing out each word:
"Vasichka, I must tell you, the sort of im-mor-al-i-ty that goes on there! Ah, how immoral! And mind you, I don’t mean simple women, or middling sorts, but aristocrats, those puffed-up society ladies! It’s simply appalling, I could hardly believe my own eyes! I shall die and never forget it! However could anyone forget themselves to such a degree that... ah, Vasichka, I don’t even want to speak of it! Take my own travelling companion, Yulia Petrovna, for instance... Such a good husband, two children... belongs to the most respectable circle, always plays the saint – and then, can you imagine... Only, papochka, this, of course, is entre nous between ourselves (French).... Give me your word of honour you won’t tell a soul?"
"Now, what an idea! Of course I won’t tell."
"Word of honour? Mind you keep it! I trust you..."
The lady set down her fork, arranged her face into an expression of mystery, and began to whisper:
"Just imagine such a thing... This Yulia Petrovna went off into the mountains... The weather was splendid! She rode ahead with her guide, and I a little behind. We’d gone three or four versts when suddenly, you understand, Vasichka, Yulia cries out and clutches at her breast. Her Tatar catches her round the waist, or she’d have fallen clean out of the saddle... I ride up to her with my own guide... What is it? What’s the matter? ’Oh,’ she cries, ’I’m dying! I feel faint! I can’t go on!’ Imagine my fright! Then let’s turn back, I say! ’No,’ she says, ’Natalie, I cannot ride back! If I take even one more step I shall die of the pain! I’m having spasms!’ And she begs, she implores, for God’s sake, me and my Suleiman, to ride back to town and bring her some Bestuzhev drops, which always help her."
"Wait a moment... I don’t quite follow..." muttered the husband, rubbing his forehead. "A minute ago you said you’d only seen these Tatars from a distance, and now you’re telling me about some Suleiman or other."
"Oh, there you go picking at words again!" the lady frowned, not in the least put out. "I can’t bear suspiciousness! I simply cannot bear it! It’s stupid, stupid of you!"
"I’m not picking at anything, but... why say what isn’t true? You went riding with the Tatars – very well, so be it, God bless you – but... why go wriggling round it?"
"Hm!.. well, you are a strange one!" the lady flared up. "Jealous of Suleiman, are you! I can just imagine how you’d manage riding into the mountains without a guide! I can just imagine! If you don’t know anything about life down there, if you don’t understand it, then you’d better hold your tongue. Hold your tongue and say nothing! Without a guide you can’t take a single step there."
"I daresay!"
"Please, none of those stupid smiles! I’m not some Yulia or other, you know... I don’t defend her, mind, but I... pssst! Though I don’t go about playing the saint myself, I never forgot myself to that extent. My Suleiman never once overstepped the line... No, indeed! Mametkul, it seems, sat with Yulia the whole time, but the moment it struck eleven o’clock with me, it was: ’Suleiman, march! Off you go!’ And off my silly Tatar would go. I kept him well in hand, papochka, in an iron grip. The moment he so much as started grumbling about money or some such thing, I’d say: ’Wha-at? What did you say? Wha-at?’ And his heart would simply sink into his boots... Ha-ha-ha... Such eyes, you understand, Vasichka, black, coal-black, such a silly little Tatar face, so funny... I held him like this, do you see! Just like this!"
"I can imagine..." mumbled her husband, rolling little balls of bread.
"Stupid, Vasichka! I know just what’s in your mind! I know exactly what you’re thinking... But I assure you, he never once overstepped the line with me, even on our excursions. For instance, whether we were riding into the mountains or out to the Uchan-Su waterfall, I always told him: ’Suleiman, ride behind! There now!’ And he always rode behind, poor fellow... Even during... even in the most touching moments I would say to him: ’All the same, you must never forget that you are only a Tatar, and I am the wife of a state councillor!’ Ha-ha..."
The lady burst out laughing, then quickly glanced about her and, putting on a frightened expression, fell to whispering again:
"But Yulia! Ah, that Yulia! I do understand, Vasichka, why one shouldn’t mind a little mischief now and then, why one shouldn’t rest a while from the emptiness of society life? All that’s well and good... amuse yourself, by all means, no one will condemn you for it, but to take it seriously, to make scenes over it... no, say what you like, that I cannot understand! Just imagine, she was jealous! Now, isn’t that foolish? One day Mametkul, her admirer, comes to call on her... She wasn’t at home... So I invited him in to see me instead... we got to talking, this and that. They’re quite amusing creatures, you know! We passed the evening quite pleasantly, without noticing the time... Then suddenly in flies Yulia... falls upon me, upon Mametkul... makes a dreadful scene... pah! I cannot understand that sort of thing, Vasichka..."
Vasichka grunted, frowned, and began pacing about the room.
"A merry time you all had there, I must say!" he growled, smiling with distaste.
"Now, how stu-upid that is!" Natalya Mihalovna took offence. "I know exactly what you’re thinking! You always have such nasty thoughts! Very well, then, I shan’t tell you anything more. I simply shan’t!"
The lady pouted and fell silent.
