A provincial doctor's daughter who refuses Laptev's sudden proposal, then accepts it the next day out of loneliness after weighing her prospects; her marriage begins loveless and dutiful, curdles into open unhappiness after the death of their infant daughter Olya, and only in the novella's final year settles into a real, if not passionate, affection for her husband -- arriving, the story's closing irony, just as his own love for her has begun to fade.
