2 Commerce Counsellor Mekhanizmov has three daughters: Zina,
Masha, and Sasha. A hundred thousand in dowry has been put in the bank for each of them. That, however, is beside the point.
3 Sasha and Masha are nothing much in themselves. They dance beautifully, embroider, blush easily, dream, and love lieutenants – and that, it seems, is all; but the eldest, Zina, on the other hand, belongs to that rare number of unordinary natures. You are more likely to meet a teetotal reporter on life’s road than a nature like that.
4 It was Sasha’s
name day. We, the neighboring landowners, dressed in our finest and harnessed our best horses and drove out with our congratulations to Mekhanizmov’s estate. Some twenty years ago a tavern had stood on the site of that estate. The tavern grew and grew and grew into the loveliest of farms, with gardens, ponds, fountains, and bulldog-faced footmen. On arriving and offering our congratulations, we sat straight down to dinner. Julienne soup was served. Before the julienne we had two glasses each and a bite to go with them.
5 “Shall we not have a third?” proposed Mekhanizmov. “God loves a trinity, and, er... tres hvatsiunt consylium
Tres facium consilium (Latin) – three men make a council.... Latin, brothers! Yashka, hand over, you swine’s mug, the herring from that table there! Gentlemen of the gentry, come now! No ceremony!
Dmitry Petrych, zhe vu pri ale masher! I beg you, begin, my dear! (garbled French –
je vous prie, allez, ma chère).”
– je vous prie allez, ma chere).
6 “Ah,
Papa!” remarked Masha. “Why do you go on so? You’re just like the merchant Vodyankin... with his treating everyone.”
7 “I know what I’m saying! Your business is – hush! It’s only in front of guests that I let them address me familiarly!” Mekhanizmov whispered across the table to me. “For the sake of civilization! But without guests – not on your life!”
8 “You can’t make a gentleman out of a boor!” sighed the general with the ribbon, sitting next to me. “A swine he was, and a swine he remains...”
9 Little by little Mekhanizmov got drunk, remembered his tavern-keeping youth, and ran wild. He hiccuped, took it into his head to speak French, swore filthily...
10 “Stop it!” remarked his friend the general. “There’s a decency even to indecency! What sort of a fellow are you, brother!”
12 At one end of the table a chair lurched desperately and cracked. We looked toward the sound and saw two large black eyes, hurling lightning and sparks at Mekhanizmov. Those two eyes belonged to Zina, a tall, slender brunette, cinched all in black. Pink patches ran over her pale face, and in every patch sat spite.
13 “I beg you, Father, stop!” said Zina. “I do not love buffoons!”
14 Mekhanizmov glanced timidly at her eyes, fidgeted, drank down a glass of
cognac at one go, and fell silent.
15 “Aha!” we thought. “This one is no Sasha and no Masha... There’s no joking with this one... No ordinary nature... So there...”
16 And I fell to admiring that angry face. I confess I had not been indifferent to Zina even before this. She is lovely, she looks like
Diana, and she is eternally silent. And an eternally silent maiden, as you know, carries within her so many secrets! She is a bottle of some unknown liquid – you would drink it, but you are afraid: what if it’s poison?
17 After dinner I went up to Zina and, to show her that there are people who understand her, I began speaking of the environment that devours a man, of truth, of labor, of women’s freedom. From women’s freedom, under the influence of a certain glow, I passed on to the passport system, the rate of exchange, women’s courses of higher education. I spoke with fervor, with a tremor, a dozen times I made as if to seize her by the hand... I spoke, however, sincerely, and smoothly, exactly as though reading a leading article aloud. And she listened and looked at me. Her eyes grew ever wider and rounder... Her cheeks visibly paled under the influence of my speech... At last something like terror flickered in her eyes.
18 “Can you really be saying all this sincerely?” she asked, growing faint with horror for some reason.
19 “I – not sincerely?! To you? I... Why, I swear to you that...”
20 She seized me by the hand, bent toward my face, and, breathless, whispered:
21 “Be at the marble summerhouse this evening at ten o’clock... I beg you! I will tell you everything! Everything!”
22 She whispered it and vanished behind the door. I stood rooted...
23 “She has fallen in love!” I thought, glancing at myself in the mirror. “She could not hold out!”
24 I am – why be modest about it? – a captivating man. Tall, well built, with a beard black as pitch... In my blue eyes and on my swarthy face there is the expression of suffering lived through. In every gesture there is a hint of disillusionment. And, besides all this, I am rich. (My fortune I made by literature.)
25 By ten o’clock I was already sitting in the summerhouse, dying of anticipation. In my head and in my chest a storm was raging. In sweet, tormenting languor I closed my eyes, and in the darkness behind my own sockets I saw Zina... Beside her in the darkness there loitered, for some reason, one spiteful little picture I had once seen in some magazine: tall
rye, a lady’s hat, a parasol, a walking stick, a top hat... Let the reader not condemn me for this picture! I am not the only one with such a strawberry soul. I know a lyric poet who smacks and licks his lips every time the Muse, inspired, comes to visit him... If a poet permits himself such liberties, then to us prose writers it is all the more forgivable.
26 At exactly ten o’clock Zina appeared at the door of the summerhouse, lit by the moon. I sprang toward her and seized her by the hand.
27 “My dear one...” I stammered. “I love you... I love you madly, passionately!”
28 “Allow me!” she said, seating herself and slowly turning her pale face to me. “Remove (sic!) your hand!”
29 This was said so solemnly that the top hat, and the walking stick, and
the lady’s hat, and the rye, all leapt out of my head at once, one after another.
30 “You say that you love me... You, too, are pleasing to me. I could marry you, but before all else I must save you, unhappy man. You stand at the edge of ruin. Your convictions are destroying you! Can you really not see it, unhappy man? And can you really suppose that I would join my fate to a man of such convictions? No! You are pleasing to me, but I shall find the strength to master my feeling. Save yourself while there is still time! For a beginning, at least... at least read this! Read it and you will see how you are mistaken!”
31 And she thrust into my hand some sort of paper. I struck a match and in my poor hand beheld a year-old issue of
The Citizen. For a minute I sat motionless and silent, then leapt up and clutched at my own head.
32 “Good heavens!” I cried. “The one unordinary nature in the whole of Lokhmotyevsky District, and even she – even she is a fool! My God!”
33 Ten minutes later I was already sitting in my
britzka, rolling home.
