1 A summer morning. Stillness hangs in the air; only a grasshopper creaks timidly on the bank, and somewhere an oriole purrs its shy little note. Feathery clouds stand motionless in the sky, like scattered snow... Beside the half-built bathing-hut, under the green branches of the willow,
the carpenter Gerasim is splashing about in the water – a tall, gaunt peasant with a curly red head and a face overgrown with hair. He puffs, blows, and, blinking hard, tries to get hold of something under the willow roots. His face is covered in sweat. A fathom away from Gerasim, chest-deep in the water, stands the carpenter
Lyubim, a young hunchbacked peasant with a triangular face and narrow, Chinese-looking eyes. Both Gerasim and Lyubim are in their shirts and trousers. Both have turned blue with cold, for they have already been sitting in the water for over an hour...
2 "What are you poking at it with your hand for?" shouts the hunchback Lyubim, shivering as if in a fever. "You garden-head, you! Hold it, hold it, or it’ll get away, curse it! Hold it, I tell you!"
3 "It won’t get away... Where’s it going to get away to? It’s wedged itself under the snag..." says Gerasim in a hoarse, muffled bass that seems to come not from his throat but from the depths of his belly. "Slippery devil, there’s nothing to grab hold of."
4 "Grab it by the gills, by the gills!"
5 "Can’t find the gills... Wait, I’ve got hold of something... Got it by the lip... It bites,
the devil!"
6 "Don’t pull it by the lip, don’t – you’ll let it go! Grab it by the gills, by the gills! There you go poking with your hand again! What a witless peasant, God forgive me! Grab it!"
7 "’Grab it’..." Gerasim mocks. "Quite the commander we’ve found here... You’d best come and grab it yourself, you hunchbacked devil... What are you standing there for?"
8 "I’d have grabbed it if I could... How’s a man of my puny build supposed to stand under the bank? It’s deep there!"
9 "Never mind that it’s deep... Swim."
10 The hunchback flails his arms, swims up to Gerasim, and grabs hold of the branches. At his very first attempt to stand on his feet, he goes under headfirst and sends up a stream of bubbles.
11 "Told you it was deep!" he says, rolling the whites of his eyes angrily. "Am I to sit on your neck, or what?"
12 "Get up on the snag... There’s plenty of snags, like a staircase..."
13 The hunchback feels about with his heel for the snag and, gripping several branches firmly at once, stands up on it... Having got his balance and steadied himself in the new position, he bends over and, trying not to swallow water, begins feeling about among the snags with his right hand. Tangling himself in the weeds, slipping on the moss that covers the snags, his hand runs into the spiny claws of a crayfish...
14 "Nobody’s seen you here yet, you devil!" says Lyubim, and angrily flings the crayfish onto the bank.
15 At last his hand gropes its way to Gerasim’s hand and, sliding down along it, comes upon something slimy and cold.
16 "The-ere he is!.." Lyubim smiles. "A big one, the devil... Spread your fingers, I’ll get him now... by the gills... Wait, don’t shove with your elbow... I’ll get him now... now, just let me get hold of him... He’s wedged himself far under the snag, devil take him, nothing to grip... Can’t reach his head... All you can feel is his belly... Kill that mosquito on my neck, it stings! I’ll get him now... under the gills he goes... Come at him from the side, poke him, poke him! Prod him with your finger!"
17 The hunchback, puffing out his cheeks, holding his breath, bulges his eyes and apparently is already getting his fingers "under the gills," but just then the branches his left hand is clutching give way, and he – splash! – falls into the water, losing his balance. As if frightened, rippling circles run away from the bank, and bubbles jump up where he fell. The hunchback surfaces and, snorting, grabs hold of the branches.
18 "You’ll drown yet, devil, and I’ll have to answer for you!.." Gerasim wheezes. "Get out, go to the devil with you! I’ll pull him out myself!"
19 A quarrel breaks out... And the sun beats down and beats down. The shadows grow shorter and draw into themselves, like a snail’s horns... The tall grass, warmed by the sun, begins to give off a thick, cloyingly honeyed scent. Noon is coming soon, and Gerasim and Lyubim are still floundering under the willow. A hoarse bass and a chilled, shrill tenor tirelessly disturb the stillness of the summer day.
20 "Pull him by the gills, pull! Wait, I’ll push him out! Where are you shoving that great fist of yours? Use your finger, not your fist, you mug! Come at him from the side! From the left, from the left, there’s a hole on the right! You’ll end up supper for the devil! Pull him by the lip!"
21 The crack of a whip is heard... Along the sloping bank a herd is trudging lazily down to the watering place, driven by
the herdsman Yefim. The herdsman, a decrepit old man with one eye and a twisted mouth, walks with his head bowed, looking down at his feet. The sheep are the first to reach the water, then the horses, then, after the horses, the cows.
22 "Push him from underneath!" he hears Lyubim’s voice. "Stick your finger in! Are you deaf, you de-evil, or what? Tfoo!"
23 "Who’s that you’ve got there, lads?" shouts Yefim.
24 "
A burbot! Can’t get him out no matter what! Wedged himself under the snag! Come at him from the side! Come on, come on!"
–
25 Yefim squints his one eye at the fishermen for a moment, then takes off his
bast shoes, throws his little sack off his shoulders, and pulls off his shirt. He hasn’t the patience to take off his trousers, and, crossing himself, balancing on his thin, dark arms, climbs into the water in his trousers as he is... He wades some fifty paces along the muddy bottom, then strikes out swimming.
26 "Wait, lads!" he shouts. "Wait! Don’t pull him out carelessly, you’ll lose him. It has to be done right!.."
27 Yefim joins the carpenters, and all three, jostling one another with elbows and knees, puffing and cursing, churn about in the one spot... The hunchbacked Lyubim chokes, and the air rings with a sharp, convulsive coughing.
28 "Where’s the herdsman?" a shout is heard from the bank. "Yefi-im! Herdsman! Where are you? The herd’s got into the orchard! Drive them out, drive them out of the orchard! Drive them out! Now where’s he got to, the old brigand?"
29 Men’s voices are heard, then a woman’s... From behind the fence of the manor orchard appears
the master, Andrei Andreich, in a dressing gown made of a Persian shawl, a newspaper in his hand... He looks inquiringly in the direction of the shouts coming from the river, then trots quickly toward the bathing-hut...
30 "What’s going on here? Who’s shouting?" he asks sternly, having made out through the willow branches three wet heads of fishermen. "What are you doing, burrowing about in there?"
31 "Ca... catching fish..." Yefim babbles, without lifting his head.
32 "I’ll give you fish! The herd’s got into the orchard, and he’s off fishing!.. When will the bathing-hut be ready, you devils? Two days you’ve been working, and where’s your work to show for it?"
33 "It’ll... it’ll be ready..." Gerasim grunts. "Summer’s long, your honor, you’ll still have time for a wash... Pfrrr... We just can’t manage this burbot here... He’s got himself under the snag same as into a burrow – won’t budge either way..."
34 "A burbot?" asks the master, and his eyes glaze with a sudden gleam. "Then pull him out quickly!"
35 "You’ll stand us a half-
ruble, then... If we oblige you... A whopping burbot, fat as a merchant’s wife... Worth a half-ruble, your honor... for our trouble... Don’t squeeze him, Lyubim, don’t squeeze, you’ll wear him out! Push from underneath! Pull the snag up, good man... what’s your name?... Up, not down, devil take you! Stop kicking your legs about!"
36 Five minutes pass, ten... The master is growing impatient.
37 "
Vasily!" he shouts, turning toward the house. "
Vaska! Send Vasily to me!"
–
38 The coachman Vasily comes running. He is chewing on something and breathing heavily.
39 "Get into the water," the master orders him, "help them pull out the burbot... They can’t manage to get the burbot out!"
40 Vasily quickly undresses and climbs into the water.
41 "I’ll do it now..." he mutters. "Where’s the burbot? I’ll do it now... We’ll have him out in a jiffy! And you’d best be off, Yefim! It’s none of your business, meddling in this at your age! Which one’s the burbot here? I’ll get him now... There he is! Let go of his hands!"
42 "What d’you mean, let go of his hands? We know that ourselves: let go of his hands! You just pull him out!"
43 "How’s a man supposed to pull him out like that? You have to take him by the head!"
44 "But his head’s under the snag! A fool could tell you that, blockhead!"
45 "Now don’t you bark at me, or you’ll get it! Scoundrel!"
46 "And such language, with the master right here..." Yefim babbles. "You won’t get him out, lads! He’s wedged himself in there far too neatly!"
47 "Wait, I’ll do it myself..." says the master, and begins hurriedly undressing. "Four fools, the lot of you, and can’t even pull out a burbot!"
48 Having undressed, Andrei Andreich lets himself cool off a little and climbs into the water. But his intervention, too, comes to nothing.
49 "We’ll have to cut through the snag!" Lyubim decides at last. "Gerasim, go fetch the axe! Bring the axe!"
50 "Mind you don’t chop off your own fingers!" says the master, when the underwater blows of the axe against the snag are heard. "Yefim, get out of here! Wait, I’ll pull the burbot out myself... You lot aren’t up to it..."
51 The snag is cut through. They bend it back a little, and Andrei Andreich, to his great delight, feels his fingers slide under the burbot’s gills.
52 "I’m pulling him out, lads! Don’t crowd... stand back... I’m pulling him out!"
53 A great burbot’s head shows above the surface, and behind it a black body a yard long. The burbot heaves its tail heavily and struggles to break free.
54 "None of that... No you don’t, brother. Caught you, eh? Aha!"
55 A honeyed smile spreads over every face. A minute passes in silent contemplation.
56 "A fine burbot!" Yefim babbles, scratching under his collarbones. "Must be ten pounds, I’d say..."
57 "N-yes..." the master agrees. "And look how the liver’s swelling out. Fairly bursting out of him. A– ah!"
А... ах!
58 The burbot suddenly gives a sharp lash of its tail upward, and the fishermen hear a loud splash... Everyone throws out their hands, but it is too late; the burbot – gone, as if it had never been.
