2 There comes the sound of dogs barking – now broken and short, now an anxious, howling bay, the kind dogs give tongue to when they sense an enemy but cannot tell who or where he is. Through the dark autumn air, breaking the stillness of the night, drift a medley of sounds: the indistinct murmur of human voices, a fidgety, restless running back and forth, the creak of a wicket-gate,
the tramp of a saddle horse.
3 In the yard of
the Dyadkino estate, before the terrace of the manor house, three dark figures stand motionless on the bare flowerbed. In the bell-shaped sheepskin coat, cinched with a rope, its lower edges fringed with tufts of wool, one has no trouble recognizing
the night watchman Semyon. Beside him stands a tall, spindly-legged man in a jacket, with ears that stick out – this is
the footman Gavrila. The third, in a waistcoat and shirt worn loose, thickset and clumsy, with the wooden crudeness of a toy peasant doll,
is also called Gavrila and serves as coachman. All three grip the low garden fence with their hands and gaze into the distance.
4 "Save and have mercy, Queen of Heaven," mutters Semyon in an agitated voice. "What horrors, what horrors! The Lord’s wrath is upon us... Holy Mother..."
5 "It’s not far off, brothers..." says the footman Gavrila in his bass voice. "Six
versts, no more... I reckon it’s out at the
6 "The German farmsteads are further to the left,"
the coachman Gavrila cuts in. "The German farmsteads are over that way, if you’ll look past that birch tree there. This is
at Kreshchenskoye."
7 "At Kreshchenskoye," Semyon agrees.
8 Someone runs barefoot across the terrace, heels thudding dully, and slams a door. The manor house is sunk in sleep. The windows are black as soot, looking out gloomily, autumn-fashion, and only in one of them shows a faint, dim light from a night-lamp with a rose-colored shade. There, where the night-lamp burns,
the young mistress Marya Sergeyevna lies sleeping.
Her husband, Nikolai Alexeyich, has gone off somewhere to play cards and has not yet returned.
10 "The mistress is awake," says Gavrila the footman. "Wait, brothers, I’ll give her some instruction. Let her allow me to take the horses and as many of the workers as there are, and I’ll drive to Kreshchenskoye and in no time at all set this business... The people there are dense, thick as oak, someone needs to take charge and tell them what’s what."
11 "Oh, sure, you’ll take charge! Wants to take charge, and his own teeth are chattering. There’s plenty of people there without you... I daresay there’s constables, and district officers, and the gentry all gathered."
12 On the terrace the glass door opens with a ring, and
the mistress herself appears.
13 "What is it? What’s this noise?" she asks, coming up to the three silhouettes. "Semyon, is that you?"
14 Before Semyon has time to answer her, she leaps back in terror and claps her hands together.
15 "My God, what a disaster!" she cries out. "How long has it been going? Where? And why wasn’t I woken?"
16 The whole southern side of the sky is thickly drenched in a crimson glow. The sky is inflamed, taut, an ominous stain flickers upon it and trembles, as if pulsing. Against the huge, dull crimson background, clouds, hillocks, and bare trees stand out in sharp relief. The hurried, convulsive ringing of the
tocsin can be heard.
17 "It’s terrible, terrible," says the mistress. "Where is it burning?"
18 "Not far, at Kreshchenskoye..."
19 "Ah, my God, my God! Nikolai Alexeyich isn’t home, and I don’t know what to do. Does the
steward know?"
20 "He knows, ma’am... He’s gone there with three barrels."
21 "Poor people!"
22 "And the main thing, ma’am, is they’ve got no river. There’s a wretched little pond, and even that’s not right in the village."
23 "But surely you can’t put it out with water?" says the footman Gavrila. "The main thing here is to keep the fire from spreading. Someone who knows what he’s doing needs to take charge of pulling down the huts... Allow me to go, ma’am."
24 "There’s no need for you to go," answers Marya Sergeyevna. "You’ll only be in the way there."
25 Gavrila coughs, offended, and steps aside. Semyon and the other Gavrila, who cannot abide the airs and the haughty tone of the footman in the jacket, are quite pleased by the mistress’s remark.
26 "So then, he’ll only be in the way!" says Semyon.
27 And both of them, watchman and coachman, as if wishing to show off before the mistress with their own gravity, begin pouring out pious words:
28 "The Lord has punished us for our sins... That’s just how it is! A man sins and doesn’t think about what he is, and the Lord, well, that’s the thing of it..."
29 The sight of the glow affects everyone alike. Mistress and servants alike feel an inner trembling and cold, such a cold that their hands, their heads, their voices shake... Fear is great, but impatience is stronger still... They long to climb higher and see the very fire, the smoke, the people! A thirst for strong sensations gets the better of fear and of pity for another’s grief. When the glow pales or seems to shrink, the coachman Gavrila announces joyfully:
30 "Well, seems they’re putting it out! God help them!"
31 But in his voice there is nonetheless a note of regret. And when the glow flares up and seems to grow wider, he sighs and waves his hand in despair, though by the way he pants, straining up on tiptoe, it is plain he feels a certain pleasure in it. All of them are aware that they are watching a fearful calamity, and they tremble, yet should the fire suddenly stop, they would feel unsatisfied. Such duality is natural, and it is wrong to hold it against a man as selfishness.
32 However sinister a beauty may be, it remains beauty all the same, and a human being’s feelings cannot help but pay it tribute.
33 A small thunder is heard: someone is treading heavily across the iron roof of the house.
35 "It’s me, with Nastasya!"
36 "You’ll fall, devil take you! Can you see it?"
37 "I can see it! At Kreshchenskoye, brothers!"
38 "You can probably see it from the attic window," says Marya Sergeyevna. "Shouldn’t we go and look from there?"
39 The sight of misfortune draws people together. The mistress, forgetting her reserve, and Semyon and the two Gavrilas go into the house. Pale, trembling with fear and thirsting for the spectacle, they pass through all the rooms and climb the stairs to the attic. Everywhere it is dark, and the candle held by Gavrila the footman does not light the way so much as throw dim pools of light around itself. The mistress, for the first time in her life, sees the attic... Beams, dark corners, chimney-flues, the smell of cobwebs and dust, the strange, earthen soil underfoot – all of it strikes her as a scene from a fairy tale.
40 "So this is where the house-spirits live?" she thinks.
41 Through the attic window the glow seems wider and more crimson. Fire can be seen. Along the horizon stretches a long, bright golden band. It moves and shimmers like quicksilver.
42 "Well, that’s not just one hut burning. Why, brother, near half the village must be caught!" says the coachman Gavrila.
43 "Listen! The tocsin’s stopped ringing. That means the church has caught too."
44 "And the church there is made of wood!" says the mistress, gasping from the heavy smell given off by Semyon’s sheepskin coat. "What a disaster!"
45 Having looked their fill, they go back down. Soon the master, Nikolai Alexeyich, arrives home. He has had a good deal to drink out visiting, and now, curled up like a bun in the carriage, he is snoring loudly. They wake him. He stares dully at the glow and mutters:
46 "A sa... saddle horse! Qui... quickly!"
живо!
47 "There’s no need!" protests Marya Sergeyevna. "Now where would you go in that state? Go to bed!"
48 "A ho... horse!" he orders, swaying.
49 They bring him a horse. He clambers into the saddle, shakes his head, and vanishes into the darkness. Meanwhile the dogs howl and strain at their chains, as though they scent a wolf. Around Semyon and the two Gavrilas the peasant women and boys gather. There is no end to the wailing, the sighing, the gasping, and the signs of the cross. A rider comes galloping into the yard.
50 "Six people burned to death," he mutters, out of breath. "Half the village – gone, like it was wiped away! No end of cattle lost too. The carpenter
Stepan’s old mother burned."
51 The mistress’s impatience reaches its utmost limit. The bustle and the talk spur her on. She orders the carriage made ready and drives to the fire herself. The night is dark and cold. The ground has stiffened slightly with the faint pre-dawn frost, and the horses’ hooves strike it dully, as though on a carpet. The footman Gavrila sits on the box beside the coachman, fidgeting with impatience. He keeps looking about, muttering, rising up every so often as though the fate of Kreshchenskoye depended on him...
52 "The main thing is not to let the fire spread..." he mutters. "It all has to be done with know-how, and how’s a simple peasant supposed to understand that?"
53 Having driven some five or six versts, the mistress sees something extraordinarily monstrous, a sight not given to everyone to see, and that but once in a lifetime, and such as no rich imagination could conjure up. The village blazes like an enormous bonfire. The field of vision is swallowed by a mass of moving, blinding flame, in which, as in a fog, the huts, the trees, and the church are drowning. A bright, almost sunlike light mingles with billows of black smoke and dull vapor, golden tongues slide and, with a greedy crackling, smiling and gaily flickering, lick at black skeletal frames. Clouds of red, golden dust rush swiftly skyward, and, as if to complete the illusion, startled doves dive through these very clouds. In the air hangs a strange mixture of sounds: a monstrous crackling, the clapping of flame that resembles the beating of a thousand birds’ wings, human voices, bleating, lowing, the creak of cartwheels. The church is terrible to see. From its windows flame and clouds of thick smoke burst forth. The bell tower hangs like a black giant amid the mass of light and golden dust; it has already burned through entirely, yet the bells still hang there, and it is hard to understand what holds them up...
54 On both sides of the road there is a jostling crowd, like a fair, or like the first ferry crossing after a spring flood. People, horses, carts, heaps of household goods, barrels. All of it moves, mingles, gives off noise. The mistress looks upon this chaos and hears the piercing cry of her own husband:
55 "Get him to the hospital! Douse him with water!"
56 And the footman Gavrila stands on a cart, waving his arms. Lit up, casting a long shadow from himself, he seems to have grown taller...
57 "They set it, that’s certain as anything!" he shouts, spinning about like a devil before
matins. "Ah, the lot of you! You mustn’t let the fire have its way! It mustn’t be given its way!"
58 Wherever one looks, there are only pale, dull, as if wooden faces. The dogs howl, the hens cluck...
59 "Look out!" shout the coachmen of neighboring landowners as they come driving up.
60 An extraordinary picture! Marya Sergeyevna cannot believe her own eyes, and only the fierce heat lets her feel that all of this is not a dream...
