Headnote

Written on 22 July 1884 from Zvenigorod, where Chekhov was working that summer as a district doctor, this brief note to his fellow physician Pyotr Rozanov reports on a recurring case of paraphimosis with the wry, gossipy shorthand of one doctor writing to another, and closes with a half-joking plea not to be left to manage it alone.

The paraphimosis is unchanged. I resort to the good graces of a surgeon who has had dealings with an Englishwoman and two splendid Polish women. Without you I shall die, for I am irresolute and a coward.
Парафимоз в прежнем положении. Прибегаю к любезности хирурга, имевшего связь с англичанкой и двумя роскошными польками. Без Вас умру, ибо нерешителен и трус.
