4 Dmitry Vasilyevich! I have just read "Karelin’s Dream," and I am now strongly preoccupied with the question: to what extent is the dream you have depicted actually a dream? And it seems to me that the mental workings and the general sensation of the sleeping man have been rendered by you both remarkably artistically and physiologically correctly. Of course, a dream is a subjective phenomenon, and its inner side can only be observed in oneself, but since the process of dreaming is the same in all people, it seems to me that every reader can measure Karelin by his own yardstick, and every critic is bound, willy-nilly, to be subjective. I judge on the basis of my own dreams, which I have often.
5 First of all, the sensation of cold is rendered by you with remarkable subtlety. When the blanket slips off me in the night, I begin to see in my sleep huge slimy stones, cold autumn water, bare banks – all of it indistinct, in a fog, without a scrap of blue sky; in dejection and anguish, as though lost or abandoned, I gaze at the stones and feel, for some reason, the inevitability of having to cross a deep river; at the same time I see little tugboats hauling enormous barges, floating logs, rafts, and so on. Everything is severe, dismal, and damp beyond measure. And when I run from the river, I meet along the way the crumbled gates of a cemetery, a funeral procession, my old schoolteachers... And at that moment I am wholly pervaded by that peculiar nightmarish cold which is unthinkable while awake and is felt only by the sleeping. It comes back very vividly when one reads the first pages of "Karelin," and especially the upper half of the fifth page, where the cold and the loneliness of the grave are spoken of...
7 Feeling cold in my sleep, I invariably see people. I happened to read a critic in the
"Petersburg Gazette" who reproaches you for having brought in the "almost-a-minister" and thereby broken the story’s overall majestic tone. I do not agree with him. It is not the characters that break the tone, but their characterizations, which interrupt the picture of the dream in several places. Faces do appear in dreams, and they are invariably unsympathetic. For instance, whenever I feel cold, I always dream of a certain comely and learned
archpriest who once insulted my mother when I was a boy; I dream of people who are wicked, implacable, scheming, smiling with malicious glee, vulgar – the kind I almost never see when awake. Laughter in the windows of a railway carriage is a characteristic symptom of the Karelin-style nightmare. When in a dream one feels the pressure of an evil will, the inescapable destruction that will brings, one is always bound to see something resembling such laughter. Loved ones appear too, but they usually appear suffering along with me.
8 But when my body grows used to the cold, or when someone in the household covers me, the sensation of cold, loneliness, and the crushing evil will gradually disappears. Along with the warmth I begin to feel as though I am walking on soft carpets or on grass, I see the sun, women, children...
9 The pictures change gradually, but more abruptly than in waking life, so that on waking it is hard to recall the transitions from one picture to another. This abruptness is felt well in your work and heightens the impression of a dream.
10 One thing you have observed also strikes one forcefully: its naturalness – those who see a dream express their inward movements precisely in sudden bursts, in an abrupt form, childishly... This is so true! People asleep weep and cry out far more often than people awake.
11 Forgive me,
Dmitry Vasilyevich, your story pleased me so much that I am ready to scribble a dozen sheets, though I know perfectly well that I cannot tell you anything new, good, or to the point. Afraid of being tiresome and of saying something absurd, I restrain myself and fall silent. I will say only that your story seems to me magnificent. The public finds it "murky," but to one who writes, who savors every line, such mists are more transparent than
the water blessed at Epiphany. For all my efforts I could find only two minor blemishes in the story, and even those with some stretching: 1) the characterizations of the characters interrupt the picture of the dream and give the impression of explanatory placards which learned gardeners nail to trees in parks and which spoil the landscape; 2) at the beginning of the story the sensation of cold is somewhat dulled in the reader and becomes routine from the frequent repetition of the word "cold."
12 I could find nothing more, and I recognize that in my literary existence, when one constantly feels the need for refreshing examples, "Karelin’s Dream" is a brilliant phenomenon. That is why I have not restrained myself and have made bold to convey to you a portion of my impressions and thoughts.
13 Forgive the length of the letter, and accept the sincere wishes of all good things from your devoted
