Letter · 1887

To Al. P. Chekhov, August 1887. Babkino.

Headnote

1 Written from Babkino, the country estate near Voskresensk where the Chekhov family summered in the mid-1880s, this letter to Chekhov’s elder brother Alexander is a burst of enthusiasm over Alexander’s story "At the Lighthouse," which had just appeared in Suvorin’s newspaper Novoye Vremya. Chekhov – by 1887 an established professional with his own growing reputation – reads the story aloud with the household (his brother Mikhail and sister Maria are both drafted as listeners) and responds with a mix of extravagant praise, close editorial criticism, and the abusive fraternal banter that runs through the whole correspondence.

2 The letter is a compact piece of Chekhov’s working literary criticism: he singles out the vivid minor male characters (the Tatar, the old father, the postmaster) as successes while attacking the story’s female lead, Olya, as a lifeless type recycled from Alexander’s other fiction – the occasion for a broader complaint that Alexander does not know how to write women at all. He also gives concrete trade advice (polish work before it goes to Novoye Vremya, avoid worn-out comic subjects for the humor pieces), reports family news of their brother Nikolai’s illness, and closes with instructions about forwarding an admirer’s letter to their editor Alexei Suvorin, plus a blunt demand for an overdue fee.

Early August 1887. Babkino.
Who would have supposed that such a genius would come crawling out of the privy? Your latest story, "At the Lighthouse," is splendid and marvelous. You must have stolen it from some great writer. I read it myself, then had Mishka read it aloud, then gave it to Marya to read, and every single time I was convinced that with this lighthouse you have surpassed yourself. A blinding spark in the murk of ignorance! A clever word after 30 stupid years! I am delighted, and so I am writing to you, since otherwise you wouldn’t get a letter from me for a good while yet... (laziness!). The Tatar is magnificent, the old father is good, the postmaster is visible in three lines, the theme is thoroughly sympathetic, the form is not yours but someone else’s – new and good. The beginning would not seem so hackneyed if it were inserted somewhere in the middle of the story and broken up; Olya, too, is no good at all, like all your women. You positively do not know women! Really, my dear soul, you cannot go on forever circling around one single female type! Where and when (I am not speaking of your gymnasium days) have you ever seen women like these Olyas? And wouldn’t it be cleverer, more talented, to set alongside such marvelous mugs as the Tatar and the old father a woman who is sympathetic, alive (and not a doll), who actually exists? Your Olya is an insult to so grand a picture as the lighthouse. Not to mention that she is a doll, she is unclear, murky, and among the other characters makes the same impression as wet, muddy boots among brightly polished ones. For God’s sake, in not one of your stories is there a woman who is a human being – only some sort of leaping blancmanges, speaking in the language of spoiled vaudeville ingenues.
I think the lighthouse has raised you three sazhens in the eyes of the Novoye Vremya crowd. It’s a pity no one advised you to sign your full name under it. For God’s sake, go on in the same vein. Polish your work and don’t let it go to print ("Nov Vr") until you see that your people are alive and that you are not lying against reality. You can lie in the "boxes of curiosities" (where you have a foreman meddling in statistics (!), and a clerk dealing with criminal matters (!!)), but in the Saturday pieces, which will bring you money and a name, be careful... Don’t again describe concert performers being tried in a way no one has ever been tried since the world began, and while you’re at it, don’t touch the charitable brotherhoods either – the theme is worn out, and in the whole story the only thing that was new was the governor’s wife in a chintz dress.
Put "The Lighthouse" away. If you write another ten or so stories like it, then it will be possible to publish a collection.
I have just received a letter from Shekhtel informing me of Nikolai’s illness. Spitting blood. Probably not serious, since Kolya, who was visiting me the other day at Babkino, was perfectly healthy.
I am sending you an open letter from one of Suvorin’s ardent admirers. Since this letter expresses the wishes and dreams of many Muscovites, I do not consider myself entitled to withhold it from Suvorin, though I believe S is scarcely likely to heed it. Through someone or other (Maslov, Kolomnin, and so on) you will convey to Su the contents of this letter, or send the letter itself, observing the proper tact. Let me know the results. I do not know S’s address.
Has my book died?
I am waiting impatiently for the fee. The bill has already been sent to you. If the bill has gone astray, then take the money without it and send it quickly: I am suffering!!
My regards to all of yours, but none to you. You are not a genius, and we have nothing in common.
