1 Written from Moscow on 1 April 1888 to Timofey Savelyevich Savelyev, a provincial acquaintance living in Rostov-on-Don (at the Kopylov Hotel, Old Bazaar), to whom the envelope is separately addressed at the close of the letter.
2 A brief, courteous note: Chekhov thanks Savelyev for his letter and good wishes, explains that he will not reach Rostov before June (an earlier plan to visit "Mitya" in April having fallen through), and passes along greetings from his family. This Mitya is not Chekhov’s own brother but a relation of Savelyev’s – the editors of the Complete Works identify him via Savelyev’s reply of 28 April 1888, which reports that "Mitry serves as a zemstvo doctor of the Rostov district."
