Headnote

1 A business letter of 8 January 1889 from Moscow, addressed directly to the theatrical figure Chekhov has been calling simply "Fyodorov(-Yurkovsky)" throughout the surrounding correspondence and repeatedly asking Suvorin to identify by name and patronymic. This letter is itself the answer: its salutation gives the addressee as "Fyodor Alexandrovich," finally supplying – via the letter’s own address line – the first name and patronymic that Chekhov’s running joke ("What is Fyodorov’s name?") had left unresolved across three prior letters. The subject is the revision of the role of Sasha in "Ivanov" now that Maria Savina has agreed to play her.

2 After the double dateline (1-2) and a salutation split across two short lines (3-4), Chekhov explains that Savina’s agreement to play Sasha has prompted him to substantially rework a role he had originally written without much care, and asks Fyodorov not to rush the copying-out of the parts but to send him a copy of the play as quickly as possible, laying out a precise timetable for returning his corrections once he has it in hand (5). He reassures Fyodorov that all corrections and variants will be duly passed by the censor without delay on his end (6), gives his Moscow address for the copy to be sent, with Suvorin as an alternate forwarding route (7), and closes with a formal sign-off split across two lines, "Respectfully yours, / A. Chekhov" (8-9).

Dear
Marya Gavrilovna Savina has agreed to play Sasha in my play, and meanwhile the part of Sasha is extremely pale and offers scant material for the stage. When I wrote it a year and a half ago, I did not attach any particular importance to it. But now, in view of the honor M. G. is doing my play, I have decided to remake this part from the ground up, and in places have already remade it quite drastically, so far as the play’s framework allowed. I earnestly beg you not to hurry with the copying-out of the parts, and to send me a copy of my play as soon as possible. The part for Act III is almost ready; for Act IV I can do it only with the play in hand. You will receive all the corrections and variants two days after I receive the play. So if I receive the copy on the 15th, the corrections will be delivered to you on the 17th – no later. But it would be desirable to have the copy of the play before the 15th.
All the corrections and variants will be duly passed by the censor. On that score you may be entirely at ease. I shall not hold things up.
My address: "Moscow, Kudrinskaya-Sadovaya, the Korneev house." Be so good as to send the copy of the play by registered wrapper to this address, or else send it on to A. S. Suvorin with the inscription: "for prompt forwarding to A. P. Chekhov."
Respectfully yours,
A. Chekhov.
