Letter to Alexei Nikolaevich Pleshcheev, 27 November 1889, Moscow.

Pleshcheev (1825-1893) was a poet, critic, and senior editor at the journal Severny vestnik ("The Northern Herald"), a close literary confidant of Chekhov’s in this period and a frequent correspondent. This letter apologizes for a long silence, then moves through a run of characteristic topics: Chekhov’s play "The Wood Demon" (Leshii), gossip about the fate of Severny vestnik, a wish to visit St. Petersburg, family news (a long visit from Natasha Lintvareva), theater gossip about a Daudet adaptation, praise of the young Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, a remark on his own accumulating story ideas, an inquiry about Pleshcheev’s health (an influenza was going around), and closing greetings from the Chekhov household at their Luka estate.

Chekhov opens with a mock-Church-Slavonic flourish apologizing for idleness (a comic paraphrase of a Lenten prayer of repentance – see note below). He declines Pleshcheev’s offer to publish "The Wood Demon" in Severny vestnik before it has been staged and revised through rehearsal, worried it would look like editorial favoritism toward him. He dismisses a rumor that the journal is about to pass to Vladimir Chuiko and affirms solidarity ("we shall hold on"). He expresses a wish to visit Petersburg incognito to avoid a "million visits." He reports a joyful three-week visit from Natasha Lintvareva (daughter of the Lintvarev family, near whose estate at Luka the Chekhovs summered). He asks about Pleshcheev’s translation/staging of a Daudet play at Abramova’s theater and notes it is also playing at two other Moscow theaters (Goreva’s and Korsh’s). He speaks warmly and a little paternally of the young Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, predicting he will become a real playwright. He notes he has a backlog of story ideas. He asks after Pleshcheev’s health given a going-round influenza. He closes with family greetings, including a bow to Elena Alekseevna (Pleshcheeva) from his sister, and warm closing sentiments.

Hello, dear and kind Alexei Nikolaevich! Forgive me for not writing to you for so long. I have lived my life in idleness, gorged myself, laughed myself witless, overeaten – or, to put it more grandly, I have been weak-mindedly sunk in the cares of a vain world, done nothing, and written to no one.
Where to begin? Let me begin with "The Wood Demon"... To get into a thick journal with a play is a very great honor; I thank you, but I ask leave to decline that honor, for my play, until it has been put on the stage and abused in the reviews, does not present valuable material for a journal, and in its printing many will rightly see a partiality of the "Northern Herald" toward Chekhov. They will say: Chekhov’s play has never played anywhere and is being printed – why then are those plays not printed which have played on the stage and had success? That is one thing. Second, I do not consider a play ready for print that has not yet been corrected in rehearsals. Wait, my dear fellow, the time has not yet passed. When the play has been corrected in rehearsals, I will turn to your kindness without waiting to be invited.
What of the "Northern Herald"? In Moscow a rumor persists stubbornly that it is passing to Chuiko. I, of course, do not believe it. There are fewer thick journals in Russia than there are theaters and universities; the whole reading and thinking mass is interested in their fate; they are watched, expected of, and so on and so forth. They must therefore be guarded in every way from ruin – that is our direct duty. You wrote to me: let us hold on. I answer: we shall.
I have a terrible wish to go to Petersburg; I want to see you, and Suvorin, and Zhan, but I am frightened by the million visits I would have to make. It would be good to arrive incognito. Suvorin wrote to me that he will soon be in Moscow. If that is true, then he will return to Petersburg together with me.
Natasha Lintvareva stayed with us for three weeks. The walls of our chest-of-drawers-shaped house shook with her rolling laughter. Enviable health and enviable spirits. While she was living with us, in our apartment one could feel in the very air the presence of something healthy and full of the joy of life.
Have you translated Daudet’s play, and are you putting it on at Abramova’s? They say that Abramova no longer manages the theater and that the actors have formed themselves into a partnership. How true this is, I do not know. Daudet’s play is also running at Goreva’s and at Korsh’s.
Vladimir Nemirovich told me he had seen you. It seems to me that this Nemirovich is a very pleasant man and that in time a true playwright will develop out of him. At least, with every year he writes better and better. I like him from the outside as well: he carries himself decently and tries to be tactful. Apparently he is working on himself.
There is an accumulation of subjects in my head. So much rubbish of every kind has piled up that a collapse may be expected shortly.
How is your health? Has the general influenza passed you by?
All my people love you as before and every day recall how you stayed with us at Luka. They send their bows. My sister bids me bow also to Elena Alekseevna.
I bow to you too, embrace you warmly, and, awaiting a little letter from you, remain devotedly yours in spirit.
