Dated 26 December 1891, from Moscow, to Yevgraf Petrovich Yegorov, the same land captain (zemsky nachalnik) in Nizhny Novgorod province addressed in the earlier letters of 5 October 1891, 11 December 1891, 14 December 1891, and 20 December 1891.
A short, businesslike note written the day Chekhov leaves for Petersburg. He encloses a further 11 rubles, notes with mounting concern that he has had no reply from Yegorov and wonders whether his letters are even reaching him, and asks that further correspondence be addressed to him in Petersburg. He reports that the famine-relief "Miscellany" (Sbornik) has now appeared and cleared 18 thousand rubles, and proposes that, if Yegorov would only answer promptly about the state of his affairs and authorize him to act, he could ask the editorial office of the "Russkiye Vedomosti" to send at least 100–200 rubles. He closes with a courtesy and a note that he still holds 20 kopecks belonging to Yegorov.
