Dated 27 December 1891, from Petersburg – the first letter in this run datelined Petersburg rather than Moscow, confirming Chekhov’s arrival there as announced the day before in – to Nadezhda Mikhailovna Garshina, the widow of the writer Vsevolod Garshin, previously mentioned as paying a visit to Lintvaryova in.
A short, businesslike note. Chekhov reports his arrival in Petersburg, then addresses a practical matter he investigated in Moscow on Garshina’s behalf: the disposition of "Medyntseva’s capital," which he has found to be willed exclusively to churches, and on that basis he judges a letter of A. S. Suvorin to the advocate Plevako on the matter unnecessary. He closes with a courteous wish for her success and a formal sign-off.
