To F. O. Shekhtel, 2 February 1892. Moscow.

Ф. О. ШЕХТЕЛЮ, 2 февраля 1892 г. Москва.

Headnote

Dated 2 February 1892, from Moscow – a genuine distinct item from (24 January, also to Shekhtel) and from (8 February, also to Shekhtel but written from Selo Khrenovoye): different dates, different places of writing, different content.

A very brief note to Fyodor (Franz) Osipovich Shekhtel. Chekhov reports he did not win – apparently a lottery or raffle he and Shekhtel had jointly entered via a shared subscription list – and that in his disappointment he is leaving that same day for Voronezh province, where he expects to stay a week and a half; their planned dinner together must therefore wait at least that long. He closes with a one-line reminder not to lose the subscription list.

Dear Franz Osipovich, I did not win! In despair I am leaving today for Voronezh province, where I shall stay a week and a half. So our dinner cannot take place any sooner than a week and a half from now.
Милый Франц Осипович, я не выиграл! С отчаяния уезжаю сегодня в Воронежскую губ, где пробуду полторы недели. Стало быть, наш обед раньше как через полторы недели состояться не может.
Don’t lose the subscription list.
Не потеряйте подписной лист.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
