A province of central Russia, distinct from its capital city of the same name, affected by the famine of 1891-92; Chekhov made a short famine-relief trip there in early February 1892, traveling the final leg of some hundred versts by horse.

New to this letter: a short trip to Voronezh province (distinct from the city of Voronezh itself) as part of the winter's famine-relief effort, continuing Chekhov's involvement that season alongside his earlier relief travel to Nizhny Novgorod province via the Kazan road.

Voronezh province, the destination of the famine-relief trip Chekhov begins the next day, made partly by horse over the final stretch. (30 January, to Smagin, announcing the same imminent departure) and (2 February, to Lazarev-Gruzinsky, written en route/just after, reporting that the trip has also become entangled with negotiations to buy the Melikhovo estate). This is the first letter in the corpus to establish that Suvorin was to travel with him.
