Letter · 1891

To I. M. Kondratyev, 14 February 1891. Moscow.

И. М. КОНДРАТЬЕВУ, 14 февраля 1891 г. Москва.

Headnote

A brief, purely formal note to Ivan Maksimovich Kondratyev, playwright and secretary of the Society of Russian Dramatic Writers and Opera Composers, written from Moscow on 14 February 1891 – about two weeks before Chekhov’s own departure abroad (he left for Western Europe in mid-March 1891). Chekhov informs Kondratyev, in his official capacity, that the Directorate of the Imperial Moscow Theatres has just concluded a two-year contract with him for his one-act farce "The Proposal" ("Предложение"), evidently so the Society could register the production for royalty purposes.
