the Delegate

Delegate

An unnamed member of the board's anniversary delegation in Chekhov's "The Anniversary" ("Юбилей"), who arrives near the play's close to read a florid ceremonial address to Shipuchin; his repeated reading of the word "репутация" ("reputation") comically collides, in Shipuchin's addled, delirious ear, with "депутация" ("deputation") and "оккупация" ("occupation"), and the reading trails off into confused abandonment as the office's pandemonium overtakes the ceremony.
