  "Ne imeyushchy china" (Holding No Rank) was not itself a numbered grade but the formal designation for someone entirely outside the Table's fourteen tiers -- civilly unranked, beneath even the lowest official grade. Reserving this null category, alone, for Stanislav Okreits -- editor of the minor satirical weekly Luch and a recurring target of the young Chekhov's contempt (see also his appearance in "Visiting Cards") -- is the sketch's single most pointed joke: every other named writer, however minor, at least holds a rank; Okreits alone is placed outside the hierarchy altogether.
