Sergei Smagin

One of the Smagin siblings of Poltava province (near Sorochintsy), whom the Chekhov household visited in June 1888; bolts out to greet the arriving guests at night and trips over a bench (§5). Chekhov singles him out as especially charming among the siblings (§8). Distinct from the unrelated 1890s Melikhovo neighbor (Alexander Ivanovich Smagin) and his household.
