Tatiana's Day (January 25, Old Style) was the founding anniversary of Moscow University and, by the late nineteenth century, an occasion for alumni to gather and drink heavily -- a fixture of the performed identity of the Moscow "man of letters" that Vladimir Semyonych embodies.
