Reading notes

• To A. N. Pleshcheyev, 3 November 1888. Moscow. §10 Society of Art and Literature

  "Общество искусства и литературы" (the Obshchestvo Iskusstva i Literatury), a Moscow cultural society later closely associated with Konstantin Stanislavsky; newly catalogued as institution:society-art-and-literature on the strength of this letter, its first appearance in this corpus's translated letters. Chekhov mentions attending its opening, with a ball, in passing among a run of other short items.

• To A. S. Suvorin, 3 November 1888. Moscow. §3 the opening of the Society of Art and Literature

  A newly founded Moscow society for actors, artists, and men of letters, whose opening ball Chekhov attends as a guest. TWO-SOCIETIES DISAMBIGUATION -- this Moscow Society of Art and Literature (institution:society-art-literature), discussed here and again at \S7 after Chekhov returns from the ball, is a DISTINCT organization from the (likely St. Petersburg-based) Literary Society Chekhov asks Suvorin to enroll him in at the close of the same letter (\S16, institution:literary-fund). One is the society whose ball Chekhov has just attended without being elected a member; the other is a separate literary society he now actively asks to join.

  The Moscow cultural society, later closely associated with Konstantin Stanislavsky, of which Chekhov was a member in this period; its costume ball here is expected to clear roughly ten thousand roubles net for the society.

• To A. P. Lensky, 20 February 1889. Moscow. §2 the Society of Art

  An abbreviated reference to the Society of Art and Literature (Obshchestvo iskusstva i literatury), the Moscow society already established elsewhere in this corpus with which Lensky was associated and which maintained exhibition halls suitable for a painter seeking space; not a distinct organization.

• To Ye. M. Shavrova, 24–25 February 1892. Moscow. §3 the Society of Arts and Literature

  The well-known Moscow Society of Art and Literature (institution:society-art-and-literature), later closely associated with Stanislavsky; Chekhov here rules it out as the society meant in his previous letter (22 February 1892), evidently in response to a guess or assumption made by Shavrova in her reply.

• To I. M. Kondratyev, 28 January 1890. Petersburg. §4 The Society of Art and Literature

  The Moscow Society of Art and Literature (Общество искусства и литературы), an amateur/semi-professional theatrical and literary society later closely associated with Konstantin Stanislavsky, a founding member from 1888; distinct from the Society of Russian Dramatic Writers and Opera Composers that Kondratyev otherwise represents in this corpus (see the note at \S3) -- the two bodies appear side by side in this letter without further explanation of the overlap, which the letter itself does not remark on.
